Spent an amazing day with Los Lobos at Viva Fest! in San Jose.

Los Lobos is my favorite band, bar none. And that is not a claim I make lightly. I’ve seen a hell of a lot of bands in nearly every genre over the years, and none has ever impressed me the way Los Lobos has – as musicians and as people.

These guys can play anything, from Mexican sones, rancheras and mariachi fare to rock and soul. They are great songwriting talents in their own right, amazing arrangers, and musicians who capture … MORE

Latin American Social Club plaques on front of El Casino Ballroom

As work progresses and funding is sought toward the creation of an El Casino Ballroom documentary, an array of partners is whirling into place to help make it all work.

In addition to the Arizona Historical Society, the Latin American Social Club, Spanish radio veteran Bob Feinman, The Fox Theatre Foundation and community radio station KXCI have signed up to help the El Casino Ballroom documentary  project take flight.

The addition of these significant partners will help us expand our ability to tell the full story of El Casino Ballroom’s place as not just a venue of choice for entertainment and family gatherings but a true agent of change in the Tucson community.

Usher Joe Garcia at Tucson's Cine Plaza Theater

Joe Garcia, beloved usher of Tucson’s Spanish language theater – the Cine Plaza – has died, Sept. 11, 2011. He was 74 years old.

A wake for Mr. Garcia will be held from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, September 15 at the Martinez Funeral Home, 2580 South 6th Avenue, Tucson, Arizona. The funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 South Stone Avenue, Tucson, Arizona.

When we did the original Cine Plaza documentary in 2010, many told us stories of Joe Garcia and what an engaging and special man he was. And we had Joe Garcia himself, who for decades was the usher at the Cine Plaza,  to tell his side of the story.

At the Fox Theatre premiere  in 2010. the lead singer of Indie Rock band Calexico, Joey Burns, happened to sit behind Joe Garcia. When Mr. Garcia was recognized from the stage and stood up, a thunderous wave of applause came over the hall. People ran up and hugged him. Afterward Joey Burns told me of the crowd reaction, “Now I know what a rock star is.”

Below is an excerpt on Joe Garcia from the original Cine Plaza documentary series episode, which is available on loan through the Pima County Public Library, and also for sale on DVD by clicking here and following to the green type near the bottom of the page.

Daniel Buckley starts Mariachi blog

Daniel Buckley in the audience

Long-time mariachi and folklórico writer Daniel Buckley has launched a new mariachi blog in association with the San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival, VivaFest!

Buckley pitched the idea to management of the San Jose festival in large part because its policies have been controversial, particularly to the traditional mariachi world.

Totally independent of the San Jose festival itself, the purpose of the blog is to invite honest and direct feedback on a variety of mariachi and folklórico related topics.

While it has been broadly successful for 30 years, the mariachi festival/conference movement has suffered some growing pains in the last five years. Is the movement running out of steam? Are depressed ticket sales a function of the economy or a lack of “star” anchor attractions? Are mariachi and folklórico students getting the best possible instruction? What’s missing in our conferences? By inviting feedback of all sorts the hope is to see what is and isn’t working, what the general consensus is for where such gatherings should go in the future, and to delineate the most important elements of such events to build upon.

It should be an incredible scene as the quilters drop off their creations. I’ll be shooting stills as well as video throughout the drop off process.

The actual Arizona state centennial is Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), 2012.

More details to come.

The show features 100 quilters from around the state of Arizona. Buckley will document the show’s construction and do interviews with a group of quilters featured in the project, along with the curator of the show.

Buckley will keep a blog of the project to update on progress and tell stories as the work progresses. At the end of the project, a hard drive with all of the raw footage will go to the AHS library for use by future scholars and researchers.
